Web Design 90s, A Nostalgic Look

A nostalgic return to the 90s web design, and a warning to anyone whose website is an accidental anachronism.

Remember the days when every PC was beige, every website had a little Netscape icon on the homepage, Geocities and Tripod hosted just about every personal home page single, and “Google” was just a funny sounding word?

The mid 1990s were the playful childhood of the World Wide Web, a time of great hope for the future and pretty low standards for this. These are the days when the process is a web search meant bending over several pages of listings rather than glancing at the first three results – but at least relatively few of these sites should be shamelessly profit.

Hallmark 1990s, Web Design

Of course, if someone says he looks like a Web site he had in 1996, it is not a compliment. You start to imagine loud background images, and little “email me” mailboxes with letters in and out in an endless loop. Amateurish, stupid, unprofessional, conceited, and unusable are adjectives that have been described well enough, because most sites made it ten years ago.

Why do websites have been so bad then?

Dizziness. When a new toy is released, be it JavaScript, Java, frames, animated GIF or Flash, it was simply crammed into a box of stuffed toys have a website, whether it served other purposes.
